Job SummaryTheManager, Employee Relations (ER)will oversee all employee relations activities, policies, processes, procedures, and education across the university and will demonstrate employee relations expertise, excellent judgment, and highly developed analytical, interpersonal, problem-solving and communication skills. The Manager, Employee Relations will set the strategy for employee relations and support their team in handling workplace concerns and action plans and will provide intervention as necessary.

This role will work extensively with unit/school HR Partners to identify opportunities to proactively and preventatively address common employee relations issues, targeting areas of the university with high risk and will serve as an expert to provide guidance and coaching to managers and HR Partners to address employee behavior and performance areas. The Manager, Employee Relations will stay attuned to organizational and operational changes across the university to identify potential employee relations risks and develop plans to address proactively, as well as maintain a pulse on California employment legal trends. This role will execute USC’s vision while championing USC’s culture and values. Minimum QualificationsThe candidate for the position ofManager, Employee Relations (ER)must meet the following qualifications:+ Bachelor’s degree in business, psychology, communications, employment law, industrial relations or another related field.

+ Seven or more years of experience in one or more of the following fields: human resources, behavioral or social science, or organizational psychology. + One or more years of experience leading teams in a management or leadership role. + Experience in areas of employment law and/or employee relations. + Sound judgment, high integrity, problem-solving skills and the ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential information relating to HR.

+ Knowledge of employee relations concern or grievance processes and the leading thinking around action planning. + Extensive knowledge of current major employment laws such as ADA, FMLA, etc. + Demonstrated expertise in developing and implementing both proactive and reactive employee relations strategies and plans in close collaboration with organizational leadership. + Knowledge of best practice procedures used to investigate and resolve employee concerns or grievances including best practices as they relate to reducing bias during the investigation process.

+ Experience identifying needs, developing action plans, identifying deliverables, presenting results, and providing recommendations to organizational leadership. + Experience ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations. + Experience establishing collaborative initiatives with multiple departments. + Experience managing a team by providing feedback, assessment, encouragement and support to help achieve goals and make positive change.

+ SHRM CertificationJob ResponsibilitiesThe candidate for the position ofManager, Employee Relations (ER)will be responsible for:+ Overseeing the management of employee relations processes and procedures to enable effective case management, conflict resolution, and problem solving. Conducting, directing, overseeing and/or otherwise assisting with employee relation issues to manage employee concerns and grievances and to identify and implement appropriate employee action and accountability practices. Identifying a fair and inclusive process appropriate for employee concerns or grievances including overseeing employee fact-finding and ensuring adherence to employee relations policies and practices. Partnering closely with unit HR Partners to identify opportunities to take proactive measures to drive employee engagement and reduce risk in employee relations across the university.

+ Providing strategic support, thought partnership, and coaching to all levels of the organization to ensure that managers and unit/school leaders understand the employee relations function including processes. Ensuring that learning and training initiatives are provided to employees on employee relations topics including existing and new policies, practices, laws, effective communications, managing people, and other workplace best practices. Staying attuned to organizational and operational changes across the university to identify potential employee relations risks and develop plans to address proactively. + Serving as an expert to provide guidance and coaching to managers and HR Partners to address employee behavior and performance.

Providing guidance and assisting with the development and delivery of appropriate performance feedback or action plans including corrective/disciplinary actions across the university. Providing rigorous data collection, analysis and reporting solutions including key metrics based on university and unit/school needs, highlighting key trends in employee relations to actively drive proactive and reactive solutions to minimize employee or workplace concerns. Working with unit/school leadership and HR Partners to develop target initiatives to address specific employee relations issues related to that unit/school. + Ensuring open and consistent communication with key stakeholders including customers and other functional HR areas to drive alignment and accountability.

Creating a communication or marketing plan designed to build awareness and trust in the employee relations function. Partnering with Office of General Counsel as needed. Preparing and/or review written responses to requests for information and hear, summarize and report on status of employee concerns or grievances. Drafting and implementing memoranda of understanding and resolutions and other employee relations actions.

+ Overseeing the use of effective interviewing and documentation techniques during fact-finding and utilization of the designated online case management system. Maintaining accurate, confidential records regarding all reported cases and fact-finding documentation. + Interpreting and applying understanding of university policies and practices, employment law, and other regulations to provide advice, guidance, or clarification for ER matters. Maintaining pulse on employment legal trends and new legislation.

+ Help ing assess current employee relations policies and procedures for potential bias and determine action plan to address. Maintain ing the highest level of integrity when managing employee relations issues and managing reported cases. Promoting an environment that fosters inclusive relationships and creates unbiased opportunities for contributions through ideas, words, and actions that uphold principles of the USC Code of Ethics. Ensur ing that legal and regulatory requirements are met in terms of employee relations to minimize exposure to liability for the organization.

+ Supporting strategic organizational changes across the university by providing employee relations expertise and guiding leaders and managers through the nuances of employee relations-related issues. The annual base salary range for this position is $131,054. 15- $147,201.
