Film Critic
The Los Angeles Times, 2300 E. Imperial Hwy, El Segundo, California, United States of America Req #32
Monday, July 22, 2024
The Los Angeles Times is seeking a full-time film critic to provide authoritative insight into the whole of cinema: Hollywood blockbusters, under-the-radar indies, titles from other countries, classics and everything in between.
The crux of the work will be reviewing movies on a weekly basis in an engaging, stylish and timely manner consistent with the deeply informed expertise that has long differentiated The Times’ film criticism. The best candidates will have the confidence to be independent in their tastes, always with the primary goal of entertaining the reader with thoughtfulness.
The film critic also will be expected to weigh in on issues of moviegoing at large, films in conversation with each other, buzzy topics of the day and prescient thoughts about where the artform is going. Long-form essays will be part of the purview, as will occasional thematic round-ups and year-end lists. Contributions to group projects will be a part of the workload.
The best candidates will be able to respond quickly and authoritatively to the deaths of major film artists. Candidates should have a custodial zeal for the history of cinema in total and should be able to celebrate the best of Hollywood, to weigh in on awards races and champion titles that might otherwise get overlooked.
Candidates must have the depth of film criticism experience to maintain the paper’s status as a leader of film opinion. The critic must be prepared to attend national and international film festivals and to produce dispatches on deadline. The critic will represent The Times at festivals and other events, moderating discussions as needed, as well as on TV and radio. Comfort with public speaking and experience with podcasting and video projects are pluses.
