LA County Library serves 3.4 million residents across 3,000 square miles through its 86 libraries, 4 Cultural Resource Centers, and mobile fleet of 15 vehicles, including 4 Bookmobiles, 6 MakMo’s (maker mobiles), 3 Reading Machines (early literacy vehicles), and 2 mobile outreach vehicles.

The Position:
Perform library-related clerical work in a community or specialized library, or at Regional or Library Headquarters.
Positions allocable to this part-time, hourly class report to a permanent staff member in the LA County Library and perform clerical duties requiring a working knowledge of routine library-related clerical and support functions. Incumbents must exercise initiative and independent judgment within established procedural and policy limits.
Essential Job Functions
Essential duties include, but are not limited to:
Checks in and out and/or processes library materials for customers.
Registers new customers (borrowers) according to pre-determined and specialized procedures.
Explains and enforces library policies and procedures.
Answers questions and gives information to the public concerning such matters as library rules, fines, and fees, locating materials, etc.
Operates office machines such as computers and small office equipment incidental to the performance of other duties.
Performs related general clerical work as required.
Assists in shelving and transporting materials.
Pack and unpack outgoing and incoming delivery shipments as needed.
Requirements
To qualify for this exam, you must have three (3) months of public customer service experience such as sales, food service, receptionist, or any other closely related customer service role.
AGE: At least 18 years of age.
PHYSICAL CLASS III – Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience based upon application information and Desirable Qualifications, weighted 100%.
Extra credit will be given to qualified candidates with the Desirable Qualifications.
Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination to be added on the eligible list.

Benefit Information: Depending on the position, the successful candidate will enroll in a contributory defined benefit pension plan if the candidate is a “new member” of the County’s defined benefit plan (LACERA) on or after January 1, 2013 (first employed by the County on or after December 1, 2012) – unless she or he established reciprocity with another public retirement system in which she or he was a member before January 1, 2013. It should be noted that County employees do not pay into Social Security, but do pay the Medical Hospital Insurance Tax portion of Social Security at a rate of 1.45%. The Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association (LACERA) has reciprocal agreements with several public retirement systems in California.
